The Last Alibi by David Ellis

The Last Alibi is the latest in the series featuring powerhouse defense attorney Jason Kolarich and his partner Shauna. Jason is recovering from knee surgery, the result of which is an addiction to pain pills--which is definitely clouding his judgment. He gets involved with a woman named Alexa who his friends keep telling him is bad news. Then a new client comes in saying he thinks he will be arrested for the murder of two women that he just coincidentally knew. Jason gets a bad feeling about the guy--which quickly turns out to have been the right response--and soon Jason himself is on trial for a murder he didn't commit.

The beginning of the book moved a little slowly but about halfway through, things really picked up--and I couldn't put it down. You don't necessarily have had to read the earlier books in this series for this one to make sense. It works well as a stand-alone legal thriller.
