Revolutionary by Alex Myers

It's the 1770s and Deborah Sampson, former indentured servant, is now earning her keep as a weaver.
Even though she's freed of her servitude, her life is very constrained and because she has no husband or family, many of the townsfolk are suspicious of her and spread unfounded rumors about her.
She finally has had enough, takes off, disguises herself as a man called Robert and joins the Army to fight the British. Which she manages to pull off for over a year. All of it would seem unbelievable except it is true.

Even though she's living under rough conditions in the Army, she loves the freedom--and the respect she earns from her fellow soldiers. And that makes her wonder what she's going to do when the war is over--
continue life as Robert or go back to her unsatisfying life as Deborah.

The American Revolution is not the setting for as many books as say the Civil War or World War II.
So it's interesting to learn about life for the average Colonial soldier. It's also fascinating to see the two different lives Robert and Deborah are able to lead, even though they're the same person.
