Slow Burn by Ace Atkins

Slow Burn is the latest in the Spenser series, ably taken over by Ace Atkins since the death of Robert Parker. While his writing isn't quite as succinct as Parker's was, he has kept the basic tone of the Spenser series, something that did not seem to be true with the Jesse Stone series (taken over by different writers).

In Burn, someone is setting fires all over Boston. In the most spectacular, at an abandoned church, three firefights are killed. The arson squad can't prove that the church fire was arson, even though everyone thinks it was. So one fireman, on the sly, brings Spenser in, to see if he can suss out what is going on. We, the readers, know who the firebugs are from the very beginning, as well as their midsguided motivation. But it takes Spenser to finally make some leeway in the investigation. However, in the process, he manages to rile up a new mob boss in town, which doesn't bode well for his--and Hawk's (and probably Susan's) future.

Good story, in keep with the spirit of Robert Parker's original Spenser novels.
