The Other Americans by Laila Lalami

This would be an excellent choice for a book group discussion because it would be interesting to hear other people's opinions of the characters in this book and their actions.

The story starts with the hit-and-run death of Moroccan immigrant Driss as he's leaving the diner he owns in the Mojave desert late one night. The only witness is an illegal alien named Efrain, who is understandably reluctant to come forward for fear of deportation. The narration alternates between Driss's wife, Maryam, his daughter, Nora, the cop in charge of the case, Coleman, and another cop, Jeremy (an old friend of Nora's from high school). Sometimes we get their different perspectives on the same events. Other characters who pop up from time to time include Anderson, who owns the bowling alley next to the diner--and his son AJ, who has just returned to his hometown, and Nora's sister the dentist, who seems to be living the dream. But for all of these characters, all is not as it appears on the surface and the investigation into Driss's death uncovers a lot of secrets.

The Other Americans is a compelling, thought-provoking story about a different slice of life in America.
