Metropolis by Philip Kerr

I was sad to discover that this is the last Bernie Gunther novel because author Philip Kerr had passed away. I will miss this series. Metropolis is a fitting end, however. It goes back to the very beginning when Bernie becomes a homicide detective in Berlin in 1928.

Berlin in the 20s is a chaotic place, still recuperating from the first world war. The seeds of the second world war have already been planted--Nazis, antisemitism, poverty. The main plot involves Bernie's first big case on the Murder Commission--someone is killing and scalping prostitutes. Then someone starts killing crippled war vets--and Bernie begins to think the 2 cases might be related. The final few pages are sad and give us a preview of the path we know Bernie's life is going to take.
