The Chalk Circle Man by Fred Vargas

I saw a review of this mystery series that's popular in Europe and thought I'd give the first book a whirl. But I have to say, I don't see what the attraction is. The cop who is at the center of the story about finding the man who keeps leaving chalk circles all over Paris is quirky and unconventional, which isn't necessarily a bad thing but everyone else in this book was also quirky and kind of strange. And there were a lot of long rambling conversations that didn't seem to go anywhere.  I finally gave up halfway through. So I still don't know why the guy was drawing chalk circles all over Paris, but that lack of knowledge isn't keeping me up nights.

And who knew Fred Vargas was a woman?
