Something to Hide by Elizabeth George

This is the long-awaited newest installment in the popular Inspector Lynley series featuring Lord Thomas Lynley and his irreverent partner Barbara Havers.  A female cop gets murdered and the team is assigned the case--which turns out to be heavily wrapped up in genital mutilation of young girls whose families have moved to London from Africa. To put a human face on the practice, one plot line involves 8-year-old Simi, whose parents both want her to be "cut" so she can be a proper bride to a Nigerian man. Her teenage brother is determined to keep that from happening, which leads to a lot of the page-turning sections of the book.

I do love the character of Barbara, an excellent detective, who goes through life smoking, eating junk food, wearing t shirts such as "Cremation is my last chance to prove I have a smoking hot bod"--and trying to stop Thomas's secretary from signing her up for activities where she can meet some men. She is a true original.

This book is 700 pages long, so it's a good way to pass a snowy weekend.
