The Good Son by Jacquelyn Mitchard

The Good Son reminded me a lot of Defending Jacob--the son is accused of murder and the parents 1)can't believe their son would do that and2)try to stick up for him. This one is different because the son, Stefan, is already in prison for killing his girlfriend, Belinda. And he is about to get out early for good behavior. His parents don't quite know how to act once he gets home. The neighborhood is in a tizzy. The dead girl's mother keeps riling everyone up. And someone appears to be stalking Stefan's family, though we're not sure to what end until near the conclusion of the book.

You kind of feel bad for Stefan, who was drugged up out of his mind the night Belinda died and truly doesn't remember killing her. Then he gets out of prison and can't find a job, indeed can't even walk out of the house without having people screaming at him.  I did have to admire his perseverance because he did seem to be getting his life back on track eventually, despite all the obstacles.

I also felt bad for Stefan's mother, who also loved Belinda, and is now facing constant threats along with the loss of her job just because she's Stefan's mother. Stefan's father, on the other hand, seemed mostly untouched by events. He kept his job, wasn't getting creepy phone calls, and really didn't seem to get why his wife was so stressed out. HIs character kind of annoyed me.

This would be an interesting book group book.
