The Escape Artist by Brad Meltzer

"Zig" works in the mortuary at Dover Air Force Base, preparing the bodies of military folks for burial. One day he gets a body from an Alaskan airplane crash who is listed as Nola Brown, but he knew Nola as a girl and realizes this isn't her. The more he tries to figure out what's going on, the more strange things keep happening. Which makes him think someone pretty high up is pulling the strings.

A lot of the story is told in flashbacks of Nola's horrible childhood--after her adoptive parents sold her to a sadistic single man. Adult Nola is still alive and she's on a mission. Zig is determined to help her but Nola doesn't trust anyone and doesn't want any help. Plus she won't tell him what her mission is. But Zig is determined to be there for her because she was there for his daughter years earlier.

It's an interesting story with compelling characters--especially Zig. But it's not my favorite book by Brad Meltzer.
