The Doorman by Chris Pavone
Chicky Diaz is the long-time doorman at the renowned Bohemia apartment building. For all the residents, he has a smile and a helping hand. But his personal life is in turmoil. His beloved wife has died, leaving him with a mountain of medical bill debt. And he's on the verge of being evicted. But the wealthy residents have no clue, as they live their privileged lives.
The main characters among the residents are Whit and Emily Longworth. He is a billionaire who will do anything for money. Emily is more down to earth, spending her days volunteering and taking care of their children. Emily is friends with neighbor Julian Sommerfield, an art dealer who is facing a volatile art market. His wife, a corporate attorney, is keeping their household afloat, but their marriage has cooled. Julian is also facing a serious health issue, which he has shared with neither Emily nor his wife.
When the story begins, there have been numerous demonstrations in the city and the residents of the Bohemia are on edge. It all comes to a head one night when a group of armed men breaks into building ...
You do get drawn into the lives of the people living and working at the Bohemia. And the ending has some unexpected twists and turns. Good summer read.
