Here One Moment by Liane Moriarty

The newest tome from the author of Big Little Lies starts with a plane full of cranky travelers on a flight that has been delayed. Once the plane is finally en route, an elderly woman stands up and starts talking to passengers, one by one. She is telling each of them when they will die and from what, which is freaking out the passengers. Then she goes back to her seat and promptly falls into a deep sleep. The passengers go home and wonder if what she said was true--especially those whose predicted demise is fast approaching. Some alter their lifestyles to avoid death by car crash or work accident. Some get health check-ups. And some, who are promised a very long life, start taking risks, figuring they'll be safe because they're supposed to live to 100. The book alternates between the stories of a handful of passengers and how they're coping and the life of the woman who made the pronouncements and why she ended up on that flight. It's an engrossing story--and thought-provoking, making readers ask themselves what they would do if they found out their time on earth was running out?

My favorite story was of the baby boy on the plane whose mother was told he would die by drowning at age 7. She enrolled him in so many baby swim classes that he practically became a fish. The epilogue telling us what happened to him later in life was perfect.
