The Last Chinese Chef by Nicole Mones

A sometime commenter to this blog, Chris, recommended The Last Chinese Chef, and I totally agree with her. It's guaranteed to give you a whole new appreciation for Chinese cooking and make your mouth water at the same time.

The premise is this: Maggie, an American food writer and recent widow finds out that her late husband may have fathered a baby while on a business trip to China. She has to go to China to get a DNA sample from the little girl. Her boss suggests that she write about the soon-to-open restaurant of Sam, a Chinese/American chef, now living in China. Well, the restaurant isn't opening as planned but Sam has been chosen as a candidate for a nationwide cooking competition related to the Beijing Olympics. So Maggie talks him into let her write about that instead. Sam opens her eyes to the long history of Chinese cuisine and to a world of tastes and flavors she had never imagined. And a friendship is born. I read the whole book in one weekend.
