Inner Circle by Brad Meltzer

A broken-hearted expert at the National Archives. A woman from his past who suddenly reappears. A dictionary that once belonged to George Washington. Two shadowy groups, one working for good and the other whose intentions are not so good. The elements are there for a good page-turner but something doesn't quite work.

Protagonist Beecher White is a sympathetic character but he spends alot of time floundering around. Clementine, the mystery woman, is not clearly drawn--and even at the end, you're not really sure what her story is. There are alot of conspiracies within conspiracies and it's all kind of confusing.

I read to the end to see what happened to Beecher and Clementine but this book is clearly intended to be the first in a series and I'm not sure whether I'll read the next one.
