Off the Grid by CJ Box

Off the Grid starts off a little slowly but turns into a rollicking good read. Nate Romanowski is living off the grid on  the ranch of a friend when suddenly 2 federal agents show up and try to enlist him in a secret mission. They promise to expunge his record (his previous activities had led him to live off the grid) if he helps them. Nate is to try to befriend a fellow falconer named Ibby, who the feds think is plotting something out in the Wyoming desert. At the same time, Nate's friend, game warden Joe Picket, is on a secret mission for the governor that leads him unknowingly into Nate's proximity.
Nate does befriend Ibby and when he learns about Ibby's plans, he's not totally opposed. But then the plans get highjacked with more evil intent and Nate, Joe's daughter, and several other hostages are soon in fear for their lives.  Joe, in the meantime, is stranded in the desert. And it looks like Nate and Joe might not make it out alive ...

The story ends with a cliffhanger. Can't wait to see what happens next.
