The Story of Arthur Truluv by Elizabeth Berg

I have seen so many depressing movies lately that I was just in the mood for something uplifting. And I found it at the library in the form of The Story of Arthur Truluv.

Arthur is a recent widower in the mid 80s who dearly misses his beloved wife, Nola. Every day he goes to the cemetery to have lunch her with and chat. One day, he sees a teenage girl, Maddy, hanging out at the cemetery. They soon strike up a conversation, then a friendship. And Arthur becomes her lifeline when major changes happen in her life.

The other main character in the story is Lucille, Arthur's elderly, never married neighbor. She thinks she has finally found happiness but that proves elusive--and Arthur becomes her lifeline too.

Basically it's just a story of people being there for each other when they need it most, which is kind of heartwarming, especially these days. In one of my favorite scenes, Lucille says to Arthur that he doesn't do anything anymore. And he says at this point in his life, his job is to be the audience, the witness, the great appreciator. But in fact he is so much more.
