Long Range by CJ Box

This is the latest in the excellent Joe Pickett (Wyoming game warden) series. This one starts with a bang--literally. Someone aims a long-range rifle at a cantankerous judge as he's sitting at his dining room table. Unfortunately for his wife, who was bringing in dinner behind him, he leaned over to pick something up and the bullet hit her. Joe, who is out in the wilderness helping another game warden investigate the death by bear of a hunting guide under kind of suspicious circumstances, gets called back to town to help in the investigation under the leadership of the inept new sheriff. At the same time, there are repercussions from the death of the leader of the cartel "wolf pack" from the last book that ensnare Joe's best friend, Nate. All in all, it's a gripping story and a quick read.
