Dirt by Bill Bufford

Bill Bufford was a food writer in NYC who decided he wanted to move to Lyon, France to learn how to cook like a French chef. Amazingly, his wife and 2 young sons went along with this plan--which was supposed to be short term but ended up lasting for 5 years. (They were there so long that when they finally did return to New York, the boys had trouble with English.)

Dirt is the story of Bill's adventures in French food as well as his family's adjustment to living in Lyon.  I love his wife Jessica, who, unlike Bill, was actually fluent in French and who had to deal with all the bureaucracy and paperwork of moving an American family to France. I also loved Bob the baker, whose shop was the source of the most heavenly bread in France. Along with his cooking adventures, Bufford  throws in a lot of information about the history of food and French cuisine, which was a little more detail than my brain could assimilate. But if you love food and cooking and France, this is the book for you.
