Dead Man Running by Steve Hamilton

 I was excited to discover a new book in the excellent Alex McKnight series. But Dead Man Running is not like the rest of the books, which are mostly set in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Alex is working as a bounty hunter, just about to catch a drug dealer, when 2 FBI agents show up and tell him he has to come with them. It turns out a serial killer named Martin Livermoore specifically asked for Alex--who has no idea why as he's never met the man. At one point Livermoore escapes custody, then the rest of the book involves Alex chasing him around the country trying to kill him--and to figure out what their connection is. This book was a lot darker and more violent than the other books in this series, so if you're new to this series, don't start here. I hope the next book is back in the U.P. with some of our familiar cast of characters.
