Fair Warning by Michael Connelly

I thought this was a new Harry Bosch book when I picked it up at the library, but no, it was a new Jack McAvoy book. The first book in this series (The Poet) was written over 20 years ago, so I guess I can be forgiven for not exactly remembering the details of Jack's life and/or his relationship with Rachel, former FBI agent and former girlfriend.

This one starts with a girl Jack had a one night stand with turning up dead. When the cops find out Jack (a journalist for a website called Fair Warning) knew her (albeit not well), he becomes a suspect. And when Jack finds out how she died, his journalist radar lights up and he starts looking for similar cases. His investigation leads him to one of those "test your DNA" companies--one that is getting into all kinds of mischief with the DNA samples people (particularly women) are sending in. After reading this book, you will never want to get involved with one of those companies. It's a compelling read (though I still like the Harry Bosch books better) and it ends with Jack heading off in a new direction, which makes me think there will be another book in this series sooner rather than later.
