Counterfeit by Kristen Chen

Ava is a successful Chinese-American lawyer, married to a very busy surgeon, with a small son. She is currently being a stay-at-home mom taking care of her son, who won't stop crying. Her husband is at work all the time and one day announces he is getting a small apt closer to work because his commute is so bad, which leaves Ava kind of at the end of her rope. Out of the blue, someone from her past, Winnie, pops back into her life. Winnie had been one of her college roommates, who suddenly left school, supposedly because of an SAT scandal. Winnie has started a successful business/scam where she imports very professional looking knock-offs of high-end purses from China, then "returns" them to a real store and gets back the price of a real designer bag. Soon she has drawn Ava into her scheme, which sets her life onto a different trajectory that she can't seem to get out of. It's an interesting character study.
