The White Lady by Jacqueline Winspear

This is the newest book by J. Winspear--though it is NOT a Maisie Dobbs story. It starts during WWI and ends just after WWII and our main character, Elinor, is involved in both. She ends up working for the resistance in both wars and is haunted by the death of a child during the second war. She is now living a quiet life out in the country, where she befriends the young family that moves in nearby. The husband is the son of London crime lord and has moved his family to the country in hopes of starting a new life on the straight and narrow. But his family wants him back and doesn't care what happens to his wife and daughter, which is where Elinor gets involved.

The story is told largely in flashbacks--and do pay attention to the dates at the beginning of the chapters or it's hard to keep track of where you are in Elinor's life.

It's not a bad story. I would just rather have been reading about Maisie's latest adventure instead.
