A compelling read

Cutting For Stone (by Abraham Verghese) hooks you from the very beginning, as
2 young nuns set off from India to undertake missionary work in Africa. A devastating illness strikes their ship and Sister Mary Joseph Praise soon finds herself stranded in the dangerous port of Aden (Yemen).

Much of the book is set at a mission hospital in Ethiopia, a country the author (a physician) clearly loves. I could have done without such graphic descriptions of some of the medical procedures at the mission hospital. Other than that, it's a fascinating story with characters (such as doctors Ghosh and Hema) that you can't help but love.
