Don't Go by Lisa Scottoline

Mike Scanlon is a military surgeon stationed in Afghanistan. He has left behind his beloved wife Chloe and their baby daughter, Emily. One day, Mike is stunned to find out that there's been an accident and Chloe is dead. He rushes home for the funeral and tries to make sense of it all--and in the process finds out many things about his wife that he never suspected. Because he has to go back to Afghanistan, he signs over temporary custody of Emily to his brother-in-law and sister-in-law. Mike has unwittingly set in motion of series of events that will later haunt him and threaten his future with his beloved daughter.

While it's not great literature, it's a good story--I read the whole book in one day. And Mike is an appealing
--very human--hero. You wonder just how well you'd handle everything that happens to him and come out whole and healthy at the end.
