Crazy Rich Asians by Kevin Kwan

If you're looking for something really different this summer, check out Crazy Rich Asians by Kevin Kwan.
It's sort of what would happen if you mixed Dynasty with a soap opera populated by only Asians
and set in Singapore. The main character is Nicholas Young. While working at a university in NYC,
he meets charming economics professor Rachel Chu and the two fall for each other immediately. After they've been dating for 2 years, he suggests that they use their summer vacation to go to Asia to attend his best friend's wedding in Singapore, meet Nick's family and travel. Rachel agrees but has no idea what she's gotten herself into--for it turns out that Nick's family is fabulous wealthy and they're convinced that Rachel is a conniving gold digger. Can this relationship survive a summer spent among Crazy Rich Asians? You'll have to read to find out.

Kevin Kwan does have a very dry sense of humor. (Be sure to read the footnotes on the family tree at the beginning of the book) And there are several appealing characters--Nick & Rachel, Nick's relatives Astrid and Sophie, Nick's best friend, Colin, and Rachel's mother, to name a few. There are also a lot of really unlikeable characters, such as Nick's mother, Eleanor, and cousins Eddie and Bernard (at least I think they're cousins. There are a lot of people to keep track of in this book) If I were Asian, I'm not sure how I'd feel about how over the top some of these people are, though it sounds like KK is writing about what he knows, since he was raised in Singapore.
