Remains of Innocence and The Possibilities

I was out of town over the weekend and got a lot of reading done so I'll do a combo review.

Remains of Innocence is the newest "Joanna Brady" novel by JA Jance. As usual, sheriff Joanna is trying to balance several balls at once--the disappearance of developmentally disabled Junior Dowdle, the death of unpopular medical examiner, Dr. Machett, and reports from back in Massachusetts that his sister is either the perpetrator of several crimes or a possible victim. Plus she has a household to run and a family to watch over. All in all, it's an excellent addition to this entertaining series.

I also read The Possibilities by Kaui Hemmings (who wrote the book The Descendants that was the basis for the George Clooney movie). The Possibilities shows how one family copes when the son dies in an avalanche. Sarah, the mom, is not coping well. Her father seems to be handling things better. But then someone shows up on their doorstep who could radically change the trajectory of their lives.

Hemmings is a good writer. You get a real sense of the Breckenridge, Colorado setting and feel the grief Sarah and her father are experiencing.
