The Keeper of Lost Causes by Jussi Adler-Olsen

I was reading an article about the best mystery novels from recent years and one of those mentioned was The Keeper of Lost Causes by Jussi Adler-Olsen. I found it at the library and couldn't put it down. The main character is Danish homicide cop Carl Morck, who is still recovering from an ambush in which he was shot, another partner was killed and the third was left paralyzed. His boss decides to make him the head of a new division called Dept Q, which handles cold cases from around Denmark. When he requests an assistant for his one-man department, a mysterious Syrian named Assad shows up. And the two of them are soon off investigating the 5-year-old disappearance of a female politician--a woman everyone else assumed has drowned, but Carl isn't so sure that's true.

This series reminds me a little of the Harry Hole series by Jo Nesbo but it's not as dark in tone.
Carl seems more well-adjusted than Harry and there is some humor in his interactions with his new assistant,
who is very closed mouthed about his past and about the inexplicable skills he seemed to possess. I found another from the series and can't wait to dive into it.
