Movie review: The 100 Foot Journey

The food looks fabulous. The scenery is beautiful. And all the actors are good, especially the one playing the brilliant young Indian chef, Manish Dayal.

Yes, The 100 Foot Journey is a charming movie (about an Indian family opening a restaurant across from a fancy French restaurant in a small town in France, if you haven't seen the TV commercials). But it could have been even better. The plot plays out just the way you expect it to. It would have been nice to have had a few surprise twists in there. And there was a little of the air of a fairy tale throughout. The Indians open their restaurant and it's a big success right off the bat--which seems unlikely. There's talk that some people don't want the Indians in their town but except for one incident, we never see that. And when the Indian restaurant loses its chef, oh well, another family member will just fill in--now doesn't it seem like the customers might notice? Still and all, it's a pleasant story with a happy ending, which is perfect summer fare if you're not in the mood for super heroes.
