Slices of Life by Leah Eskin

Each Sunday, one of the first things I read in the Chicago Tribune is Leah Eskin's column, which includes an essay and a recipe. Each essay is a slice of her life. The book Slices of Life is a compilation of those columns and it is a delight.

Some of the essays are touching (her father's death, the loss of the family dog, her son deciding he's too old for the books of his childhood). Some are sad (the ones on her battle with breast cancer). Some are funny
(her many attempts to make cassoulet). Some are charming (her trip to Paris with her husband). But all of them are well written. "Cookies are small bundles of information stored on a computer's hard drive. News to me. I'd thought of cookies as small bundles of butter and flour stored in a tin and downloaded frequently."
And the recipes are mouthwatering.
