Saints for All Occasions by J Courtney Sullivan

Nora and Theresa are living with their brother and widowed father on a farm in Ireland in the 1950s. Everyone assumes Nora will marry neighbor Charlie so the 2 family farms can be combined. But then Charlie's father gives the farm to Charlie's brother instead, so Charlie, Nora, and Theresa head off to America to try their luck there.

Nora really doesn't want to go and really is not in love with Charlie. Theresa on the other hand is excited about the adventure and opportunities that America offers. But Theresa has a little of the wild child in her and something happens that changes all three of their lives forever. The two sisters are estranged for years until something happens that devastates them both and brings Theresa back into Nora's life.

It's a good story about the ties that bind and what constitutes a family. And it was a delightful change of pace from that very dark Jo Nesbo book that I read just before it.
