A Stolen Season by Steve Hamilton

Retired Detroit cop Alex McKnight, who now lives in Michigan's U.P., sees a boat crash one night. He helps rescue the three men on the boat, which opens up a whole can of worms for Alex and his friends. At the same time, Alex's girlfriend, Natalie, is working on a dangerous undercover case in Canada. Between worrying about Natalie and dealing with the repercussions of the boat crash, Alex has his hands full. I like this series set in the Upper Peninsula. There are a lot of interesting characters, like Alex's friends Jackie and Vinnie. And the stories are engrossing. Plus you get a good sense of place from Hamilton's descriptions of life in far northern Michigan. I look forward to reading the rest of this series.
