Our Souls at Night by Kent Haruf

Our Souls at Night is a sweet story about two older folks, neighbors Addie and Louis. Both have lost their spouses and one day Addie suggests to Louis that he come over and spend the night--no hanky panky--it would just be nice to have someone to lie in bed with and talk about the day. He agrees and soon a fast friendship has started. Through their nightly conversations, we learn about both of their lives, their marriages, and their dreams. Though the two of them are happy with the relationship, Addie's grown son, Gene, is not. He is convinced Louis is just out for his mother's money--which he has his own eye on.Gene is having marital difficulties so he dumps his 6-year-old son on Addie then takes off. She, Louis and the boy, Jamie, form a happy family unit--until Gene shows back up again.
(Gene is an unhappy man who seems determined to bring everyone else down.)

As in Haruf's other books, there's not a lot of action. The stories are more about the characters and they move along at a gentle pace.

This would be an interesting book group book that I think would generate a lively discussion on seniors' rights and wishes.
