The Wrong Side of Goodbye by Michael Connelly

Goodbye is the latest in the excellent Harry Bosch series. Harry, now retired from the LAPD is working part-time for the much smaller San Fernando police department and also toiling as a PI.
In the latter role, he gets called in by an extremely wealthy elderly man, Whitney Vance, and hired to find out if the man has any heirs to leave his fortune to. The only lead Harry has to follow is that Vance's girlfriend in his youth had been pregnant when his family forced him to abandon her, a fact he had felt guilty about ever since. At the same time, in his role as a cop, Harry is trying to track down a serial rapist who seems to be escalating toward murder.

The search for the heir takes Harry back to his days as a soldier in Vietnam. And the search for the rapist has him worried about his daughter's safety. Needless to say, both are compelling stories.

What I like about this series is that Harry's personal and professional lives keep changing as he gets older. He is such a multifaceted, fully developed character.

Can't wait to see what happens to Harry next. (It was also nice to see him working again with his half-brother, Mickey Haller, from Connelly's other popular series, The Lincoln Lawyer.)
