Munich by Robert Harris

Munich tells the behind-the-scenes story of Neville Chamberlain's meeting with Hitler in 1938 in what turned out to be a vain attempt to prevent World War 2. The subject under discussion was Germany's attempted annexation of parts of Czechoslovakia.  To give the story a more personal slant, Harris gives us 2 characters--the British civil servant Legat and the German civil servant Hartmann--who were friends at Oxford. Hartmann thinks Hitler is bad news for Germany and tries to get Legat be his inside man in England to convince the British government not to trust anything Hitler says.

It's a fairly interesting look at what goes on behind the scenes in government. But this was not my favorite Robert Harris book. If you're new to this author, try Fatherland or Pompeii first.
